1. Brand loyalty. Unlike bargain-seeking humans, your dog or cat is probably fairly brand-loyal. This could be due to health issues, but you can still bargain hunt. I was able to cut the cost of our dog food by $10 per bag by buying it at the pet store with a store coupon rather than paying super market prices.

 2. Quantity. You’ll generally pay the least by buying the most. The largest bag usually gives you the lowest unit price. Discount stores, wholesale clubs, and large pet stores carry the largest bags and you can use coupons at most of those stores.

3. Manufacturers’ Coupons. Visit the manufacturer’s website and sign up for their email newsletters. Some pet food manufacturers issue big value coupons in the Sunday newspaper circulars including coupons for free items to encourage pet owners to try new brands.

4. Store coupons. Pet stores generally accept each other’s coupons but it is up to you to ask. You can combine manufacturer’s coupons with store coupons to increase your savings. Once, I redeemed $5 off a competitor’s coupon at our local pet store. I paid 23% less than I would have spent at the supermarket.

5. Put your discounts to work. Clip those coupons for a free can of dog or cat food and redeem it to make a donation to a local shelter at no cost. Animal shelter volunteers would love to accept your donation and aid their furry clients.
