1. Look for number of loads. It can be tricky to compare the costs of different brands since the concentration often varies. Compare prices on a per-load basis rather than per ounce.

 

2. Consider quality. It’s cheaper in the long run to spend a little more to keep clothes looking better longer, than to skimp on detergent and end up with drab-looking duds.

 

3. Use coupons. It’s easy to find coupons for even the most expensive name brands. At full price, I would easily pay 25 cents a load on Tide liquid at my supermarket, but I’d pay only 17 cents if I waited until Tide went on sale and used a coupon. If you have more than one coupon, stock up on the regular-sized bottles.

 

4. Choose the basic version. The powdered version of my favorite brand is generally less costly than the liquid version. Similarly, the basic version is usually less expensive than the premium varieties featuring extra ingredients or new fragrances. Add your own bleach or fabric softener rather than paying extra with add-ons for every load.

 

5. Use the correct amount. Most people use more detergent than necessary. By checking the packaging, I learned that I need just 1/3 of a capful of my detergent for a medium load and a 1/2 capful for a large load. It’s easy to assume you need an entire capful, but that’s just pouring money down the drain.
