Five Ways to Save...

On Breakfast

 Stephanie Nelson, CouponMom.com

1. Eat at home. Even though you are in a rush, eating at home costs less and takes less time than picking up coffee and a bagel later. If you are a parent, it demonstrates the priority and the importance of eating a good breakfast before school.

2. Offer light meals. Kids don’t always feel like eating first thing in the morning so I offer light meals like toast, eggs, fruit smoothies, yogurt and fruit, or a slice of pumpkin or banana bread. I keep a variety of cold cereals that everyone likes since it is easy to purchase those with a coupon or a store-brand.

3. Make ahead. I make batches of banana, pumpkin, and poppy seed quick breads to have on hand for busy mornings. One loaf will make nine to twelve thick slices that are perfect breakfast portions, and extra loaves can go into the freezer. Other make-ahead ideas include homemade bagels, pancakes, waffles, or French toast. Freeze in individual portions.

4. 75 cents or less. Try some of these breakfast ideas for less than 75 cents a person.
Option 1: 6oz. container or yogurt (.40), banana (.19), and 8 oz. glass of orange juice.
Option 2: Frozen fruit smoothie with 1//2 cup milk (.06), one half frozen banana (.10), 5 frozen strawberries (.29), and half cup of vanilla yogurt (.20).
Option 3: 1 cup oatmeal with 8 oz. milk (.18), banana (.19), and 8 oz. of orange juice.

5. You are not too busy. When family activity packs our schedules, we pack our meals to go. You can too! Your kitchen is your family’s primary source of meals. You can help everyone’s diet become healthier and less expensive.
